Cathy recently attended the 2014 Grooming Expo in Hershey, Pennsylvania. One new pet care tip she learned there was how to get rid of tear stains forever.
Tear stains comes from the tear ducts of the animal wetting the fur below the eyes. Although this is normal it can sometimes leave a reddish/brown stain on the fur underneath. On white or light colored fur it can be very obvious. The same goes for stained paws. This is usually caused by the animal licking it legs or paws and the saliva causing the same reaction. Even though it is harmless, here are some ways to eliminate the problem. Be patient! It takes 30 to 90 days to see a significant improvement.
1. Check to see if your pup’s dog food ingredients contains RED BEET or RED DYE Either one will cause reddish brown tear stains
2. Rub a little Vaseline on spots. Be careful not to get in eyes! Wipe off with a soft towel. Do this everyday.
3. Snip off red hair every two weeks. If you don’t have a steady hand or a steady dog, it would be better to let a professional groomer do this.
4. Add 1 unflavored Tums to 1 gallon of distilled water. Use only this water for your dog’s water bowl. When this 1st gallon is finished, continue using distilled water only, (no more Tums), regularly.
